After Sophie finds a letter from her deceased mother, she goes on a journey to find out what her stoic parent, Kate, was really like. In 1936, after losing her father and the love of her life in quick succession, Kate makes a number of questionable choices leading to lost and unrequited love, a tenuous love triangle, and ultimately, a child, and love to last a lifetime.
